SlidePath’s Digital Slidebox enables the Faculty of Pathology, RCPI to create an invaluable electronic archive of digital slides with significant didactic value. The RCPI is Ireland’s largest postgraduate medical education and training institution. In delivering its mission the College conducts the education, training and examination of Physicians in more than 25 different specialties. Since 1654 the College has been responsible for setting standards in medical practice to ensure optimum patient care and to promote health.
The Faculty of Pathology, RCPI originally contracted SlidePath to create an online digital slide teaching archive for use by trainee pathologists in Dublin hospitals in early 2004. Now, for the 4th successive year, SlidePath have been selected by the RCPI to maintain their national archive of teaching material for postgraduate pathology training. The RCPI use Digital Slidebox to provide online access to case material presented during postgraduate seminars. Using the system, trainees may access archived digital slides, documentation, and presentations anytime, anywhere from an Internet enabled PC. This extensive electronic library of over 700 teaching cases provides an invaluable resource for trainees across Ireland.
Dr. Sean O’Briain, National Specialty Director, RCPI says “In Dublin for many years we ran a weekly series of citywide slide seminars for pathologists in training. Pre-circulation of slides was a major problem that was solved by SlidePath. A member of SlidePath visited each consultant presenting a seminar to familiarise them with the Digital Slidebox interface, and to personally collect, scan and return slides. The digital slide images were available for study on line before each seminar and added substantially to the educational benefit. A further benefit was that the slides were available to all training centres in Ireland and by videolink we were able to expand the seminar series nationwide. SlidePath delivered a high quality reliable service with excellent support”.
